Rock Appreciation Day + Preview Night

ROCK APPRECIATION DAY:

DAMELE MINE TURQUOISE.

*To repeat the disclaimer from the first Rock Appreciation Day: I AM NO LAPIDARY ARTIST OR GEOLOGIST/GEMOLOGIST. All of my information comes from research and experience working with these stones, not mining or cutting them.

The Damele Mine is located in east central Nevada near the Godber-Burnham Mine and Carico Lake Mine. It is also known as Damale, or Damaile. The mine itself is quite small, and also produces popular kinds of variscite and faustite (similar minerals to turquoise). The high zinc content makes all three stones types the bright, collectible green and yellow colours the Damele Mine is especially known for. This also increases the hardness of the stone, although the most yellows of the turquoise can be fairly soft. The stones from the Damele Mine that are more bright green or lime in colour are more often than not faustite or variscite. The mine doesn’t produce much turquoise anymore. Most new turquoise on the market is cut from old stock rough. As with most turquoise, high colour saturation and tight webbing determine quality. Webbing can be grey, black, or deep brown in colour. Because of the rare colour intensity, Damele is very collectible and highly prized.

*

The picture above is my current Damele collection, all those goodies are available for custom orders. Below are new Damele pieces coming to both Etsy shops over the weekend…

Also coming to the shop this weekend are pieces with koroit opal, high grade Crow Springs Mine turquoise, and rare and collectible Indian Mountain Mine turquoise. The more rare turquoise is set in 14k yellow gold bezels on sterling patterned leaf bands…find them in the shop this weekend!

Rock Appreciation Day

Alright folks, so the stone for this month is Picture or Landscape Jasper. There are several different types from many regions of the USA and other countries. I’ve been using these in my “Towards Mountains” pieces because of their amazing and completely natural landscapes with horizon lines.

*As a side note I won’t be going into mine or mineral detail tonight as I’m quite sick with a cold. I’ve been under the covers all day drinking tea and eating lemons trying to recoop as fast as possible! It’ll just be pictures for this Appreciation Day.

I’m not an expert or lapidary artist, the lines between these different jasper types blur pretty easily. There are two more sought after types that are easier to identify. Biggs and Deschutes. I have no examples of Deschutes, in all honesty it isn’t one of my favourites because I’ve only seen them with a full brown spectrum instead of the gray/blue for sky. This type will usually have little dark dendrite (plant fossil) like blemishes. They’ll look like little sprigs of dark grass amongst the hills in the stone. Biggs Blue Jasper, especially old stock, is beautiful. It will usually have cool tones to it, either towards the top of where a stone is most often cut to mimic the sky, or throughout all the colouring. These cool tones are rich and deep in saturation. These are the lovely Biggs cabs I currently have:

*

*

A couple past creations using Picture Jasper~

*

*

Another recognizable picture jasper is Palomino Jasper. This always reminds me of Mt. Olympus where the Greek Gods dwell, this stone type is always so dramatic…

*

Goodies with picture jasper currently in the shop are the Towards Mountains ring and the Rolling Hills mini ring, each with a different type of picture jasper…

*

Each picture jasper is always so unique, and the older Biggs jasper is getting real hard to find. Using these in jewelry pieces is truly like framing a painting! My all time favourite picture jasper is from my first Towards Mountains ring that has sold…

*

*

Well that’s it this time ladies & gents. As always all the cabs seen are up for grabs! Sorry for the lack of information for this one, I am a pile of sniffles today. The next one will be more in depth! In the meantime, enjoy the MONTH LONG SALE in each Etsy shop!

The Woodlands…

Last weekend I was able to go the Intertribal powwow I attend every Fall. This year, I had a grand surprise-a vendor had a large amount of drilled, cut and polished wampum! I picked out several pairs and some with double holes for necklaces. All that you see below is all that there’ll be! The man who carved this wampum is no longer able to do so~

*

*

From these beautiful pieces I have made a few earrings. I’ve noticed that, on the whole, only the most exquisite of turquoise grades are used in gold jewelry. There is hardly any turquoise or wampum jewelry out there that pairs with gold or gemstones. This is a minor start to turning this around, as some wampum and turquoise is just as nice as all those fancy diamonds *in my humble opinion*. These two pairs of shoulder duster earrings swing low and loud. They have lush plum wampum, delectable green emeralds, and blackened silver chains for a unique high end look.

*

Other goods coming to the Etsy shop are mini cuties in the ever popular Rustic Arrow genre. They include a Triple Arrow Chevron stacker ring made to order in your size, and sweet little Arrow Vane chevron studs.

*

Three gemstone stackers will be joining the Woodlands pieces. Natural sapphires do not always come in blues. The rose cut gems in these sparkle in brilliant white, lazy soft yellow, and fierce cadmium hues. Set within true 14k yellow gold bezels, the sterling backings and bands have been darkened for the ultimate contrast and rustic appeal. Ready to go in US sizes 4 3/4, 6, and 7. Not your size? Just ask for a custom one, I have more on hand! For those with upcoming events, or those who just need any excuse to dote on themselves, there are the Black Needle Dangles. These post earrings feature hand sawed and textured leaf shapes with dangling black tourmalinated teardrop rutile quartz gemstones. They have a rich, subtle, and all around elegant feel to them.

New Koroit Opals…

Sorry for the delay folks! I had meant to post these Friday, but this past week was a little hectic. Below are my newly acquired treasures: some lovely smaller sized Koroit Boulder Opals from Queensland, Australia. I have tried to photograph them at different angles to show the extent of their flash and colouring. The detail in these stones are divine. All *except* the blue stone on the right in the photos of three cabs are up for grabs. Custom orders will resume July 1st unless I am currently working on a piece for you.

*

Also new July 1st: my first official Rock Appreciation Day! A friend suggested an in depth post of a single stone type, so from now on, the first day of each new month will feature a new kind of stone. Pieces that have either been sold, commissioned, or are up for sale in the shops featuring the stone will be shared. Check back July First to see what kind of stone you can learn about and how I chose to work with it!

 *

I have several pairs for the stretched earlobe folks in the works. Many are dangles and hoops for tunnels in 12 gauges. These will be in the http://www.gaugedbystasia.etsy.com shop *next week*. Preview photos will be posted prior to being listed in the shop! Subscribe to the blog or check http://www.facebook.com/TheStrayArrowJewelry to find out when.

Next week: new plugs and dangles for tunnels, and some secret new goods for the main http://www.TheStrayArrow.Etsy.com shop!

May Sale and Preview Night…

The Etsy shops are back open with some new pieces coming soon. I’ll be showing off a few before they hit The Stray Arrow shop tomorrow, but first please read on for information about this month’s sales!

*

*

May is my birthday month, and my official Customer Appreciation Month. I’ve been fortunate to work with some very fantastic, patient, and creative people for custom works. I’ve also had people leave very sweet feedback notes, all around a grand huzzah to you all! I could not be doing what I love without your support. In honor of that, ALL items in both shops have been reduced by 10%. If you have one of my “Third Time is A Charm” repeater cards, go for it! They’ll still work for either shop on top of the 10% discount. For all of those enthusiasts who read my blog-why not take another 5% off? Just enter the code “BLOGREADA” at checkout. Any sales this month will not be applying to custom orders.

*

I unfortunately will *not* be taking on any custom orders for the month of May, unless I have already started conversations with you. I have an entire work bench full of half realized projects I have been yearning to complete! In order to empty some space on the bench-and ideas floating around my head-I need a little time off from custom works. I’d like to be able to expand some of my lines and themes past the usual 5 or so pieces and really dig into some of these vague notions to form some really unique works.

*

Now, onward to new pieces! Coming to the shop tomorrow, a few more pieces added to The Birds theme that has been slowly making its way into both shops. The necklaces and rings will be *made to order*. A pair of turquoise Black Bird earrings will be joining them.

*

*
As it is now Spring, I thought it was only fitting for a little floral flair. Out across the yard are little sweet and tiny four leaf white blue flowers. I love these little four point Morning Star shapes. They also reminded me of the ever elusive four leaf clover-an old friend I always find come Spring time. With these two natural elements in mind I have created little domed flower shapes with the four leaf petals safely snug inside larger domed blooms. Made to order silver domed Petal Drop earrings studs and rings will be a mainstay. Dainty Petal earrings with precious turquoise and cluster stone rings will also be added and more to come.

Stone Adorned Digits….

Well, its been awhile. I have essentially been knocking out commissions and custom orders these past few weeks, thus the lack of new items in the shops (no complaints, though!). I also have brilliantly hurt my right wrist (possible minor sprain? something pulled? who knows), so I have been sawing away with a brace. Speed has been picking up! The weather has been lovely- perfect for open windows and doors with blaring tunes in the studio! The snow from storms has slowly melted and dim sunlight has lead to creepy and inspirational views…

*

*

Just before my Business trip to Tucson, AZ for the gem show, I was able to make myself two pairs of earrings to wear down there. These lovelies are the first things I’ve made myself in years! Both feature birds from my “Stormy Night” series styles…

*

*

I have several piercings on each ear, so these Wampum Birds fit my first and fourth piercings~the tips of the wings has *detachable* studs through them! The wampum was carved by Native artist Mark Changing Bear of buffalocarvings.com. The beauties below feature natural Royston teardrop turquoise stones…

*

*

Other recent completions include a (surprise!) Bird ring for a friend, featuring a STUNNING and deep boulder opal that almost crackles with energy!

Tucson Gem Show…

So, I have returned from Tucson with a TON of new rock goodies to share and use. This post is going to be L.O.N.G….

I’ll start with photos of lovely stones, then show off all the turquoise, and wrap up with all *matching* pairs for earrings or plugs. Tomorrow I’ll post some extra photos as well, so stay tuned!

*

Below, from left to right, we have: Blue Biggs Picture Jasper, Plume Agate (looks like snow!), a STUNNING piece of petrified wood, and a primo piece of Mohawkite! Mohawkite comes from the Mohawk Mine in Michigan. Within the snow white quartz you’ll find a shiny mix of copper arsenates with nickel, cobalt, silver and iron. The stones are a by-product of silver and copper mining.

*

*

Below from left to right: graveyard plume agate, ocean jasper, agua nueva agate, and petrified palm wood!

*

*

Below from left to right: two different kinds of LOVELY petrified wood, and a primo cut of Morgan Hill Poppy Jasper/Guadeloupe Jasper!

*

*

Below from left to right: primo Imperial Jasper Nodule, two lovely landscape jaspers, and two Mexican Bird’s Eye Ryholites!

*

*

Below is a large and super duper lovely Medicine Bow Dendritic Agate!

*

*

*

Next up-Mini cabs! Perfect for little rings or necklaces. From left to right, top row, we have: a sweet round mini Turritella Shell Fossil (perfect ring size!), red plume agate, and lace agate.

Bottom row from left to right: picture jasper, plume agate, lace agate, and a beautiful little Imperial Jasper (lovely lovely olive and rust colours)

*

*

Also new are some sweet Wild Horse Magnesite cabochons:

*

*
In the picture below we have a great high quality dendritic quartz (plant fossils trapped in clear quartz), and a STUNNING mini Golden Rutile Star Quartz. This is one of the nicest and rarest quartz types out there (on par with Medusa quartz). This is the only one I’ve been able to get my hands on, and its a FULL STAR! Usually you just see half of the design or a part of the design in a cab. This little full star lovely is perfectly round, small, and calling for a ring!
*
*
The jasper stones below I’ve heard called many names. The most popular are bird’s eye rhyolite, or ollithic limestone. Either way, whatever it is, it is definitely jasper, and fantastic! They remind me of lily pads, or rose gardens. The two stones on the right are slices of Montana Agates:

TURQUOISE TIME!
*
The amount of high quality natural turquoise I found was so exciting, especially because I found hardly any after diligently hunting the entire first day I was at the Gem Show. For those unfamiliar with “The Gem Show”, it is held in Tucson, AZ at the beginning of each year. There are several major gem/mineral/jewelry shows, and dozens of other mini shows. I only attended two-the major Gem Show at the Tucson Convention Center, which is more for gemstone dealers, and the larger tent/trailer gem show at the old Electric Park. Last year I met the nice Mr. Jim, who actually remembered me this year! The majority of my new turquoise (and all Fox Mine and #8 Mine turquoise) is from him. My darling niece patiently helped me pick out matching pairs. The Electric Park show was like an open candy store! Behold my newly found treats:
*
The pictures below are all from assorted mines, if you fall in love with one of these stones or are even a tad curious-ask me and I’ll tell you which!:
*
*
*
*
Other turquoise scored included a single piece of turquoise from the ever popular and rare Damale Mine! This fat cab (really, like a bubble), is more minty as opposed to the yellowish hues the Mine is known for. It reminds me a little of the Peacock Mine, and has a fantastic web to it. The two stones to its left are OLD STOCK Carico Lake Mine turquoise. These little guys are the real deal, and have deep tight webs with extremely saturated colour:
*
*
Another rare mine that I was surprised to find so much of out there is one of my favourites: the Apache Mine. Known for its minty turquoise and black matrix, I’ve only ever had two cabs of this that had immediately been sold in pieces. This is extremely original material, and only comes from one mine! I got Apache Mine turquoise from two different vendors….the second batch below being the Mine Owner! She was a pistol!
*
*
This huge one is calling for a cuff bracelet, what do you think?
*
*
Below is from the Mine Owner, top grade turquoise! The colours are even more intense in person. The two cabs on the top right are currently reserved for an earring pair:

MATCHING TURQUOISE AND GEMSTONE PAIRS!
*
The pictures below are all of matching turquoise pairs, mines as labeled, all from the fantastic Mr. Jim:
*
*
*
*
*
*
These are my favourite catch of anything by far. These three matched pairs are all natural, *old stock*, #8 Mine turquoise. These are the tightest webs I’ve ever seen. They are all top grade, smooth, high polished, exquisite little beautes. Ain’t nothing better:
*
*
*
OTHER GEMSTONE PAIRS~
*
From left to right in the picture below, we have: two pairs of NATURAL rounded trillion cut drusy! Perfect for elegant plugs or earrings, especially fitting for events and weddings! Next to them is a pair of oval shaped Mastadon Ivory (which would look nice with wampum beads, non?), and a great pair of lemon chrysoprase.
*

*

Finally we have, from left to right:

snowflake obsidian, super tall Four Peaks Mine amethyst gemstones, STUNNING square blue chalcedony gemstones, and sweet little red sponge corals (their detail is a little lost in the photo, but they are sponge-patterned)

*

 *

Well, that’s all folks! Everything you see is currently up for grabs except the matching Apache Mine cabs. Stay tuned for a Post of newly completed commissions…
